― Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games

Katniss is living in a much different world. What used to be The United States is now called Panem. It is made up of twelve districts. Each district does certain jobs. Katniss lives in District 12 which specializes in coal.

Over 100 years ago there was an uprising, where all the districts attacked the capital-they lost. For their treason each district must offer up two of their children as tributes to compete in “The Hunger Games.”

Katniss’s is shocked when her sister’s name is drawn. In a panic Katniss volunteers in her sister’s place.

Katniss now must keep her wits about her and try to please a crowd of people who are entertained by the death of children. Her very life is in their hands.

Suzanne Collins ensnares readers from the beginning. You are outraged when you learn the price that the districts have to pay for a revolt that happen before any of them were born. Katniss is tough, stubborn, and brave. An unlikely heroine in a harsh world.
